January 1, Beach Tragedy: Young Girl Dies in Collapsed Sand Hole

A tragic incident unfolded on a Florida beach recently, as a young girl lost her life after a hole she was digging with a boy collapsed on them. The incident was reported by several news outlets.

The emergency services in Broward County received a distress call just past 3 p.m., alerting them to the fact that two children were trapped in the sand at Lauderdale-By-The-Sea. This information was disclosed in a statement by the Broward Sheriff’s Office, which was published on the city’s official website.

Broward Sheriff Fire Rescue and Pompano Beach Fire Rescue were the first responders to the scene, which is situated on Florida’s east coast, north of Miami.

Sandra King, a spokesperson for Pompano Beach Fire Rescue, spoke to the South Florida Sun-Sentinel about the incident. She revealed that the children were in the process of digging a hole that was about 5 to 6 feet deep when the unfortunate incident occurred.

“The boy was buried to his chest and the girl was completely buried under the boy,” King told the Sentinel.

Cell phone footage obtained by WTVJ-Ch. 6 captured the frantic moments after the hole collapsed. The video shows at least 10 bystanders rushing to the scene in an attempt to dig the children out.

Both children were immediately transported to hospitals for treatment, as per the Broward Sheriff’s Office. However, the Sentinel reported that the girl was pulseless and was later pronounced dead at the hospital.

While the sheriff’s office did not immediately respond to USA TODAY’s request for information regarding the children’s ages, it was reported by multiple outlets that both children were between 5 and 8 years old, with the girl being the younger of the two.

The city of Lauderdale-by-the-Sea expressed their sorrow over the incident on their website. “Our hearts are heavy in LBTS today after learning two children were trapped in the sand,” the statement read. “We are doing everything we can to support our first responders.”
