January 1, Apple Pulls ICE Tracking Apps After Safety Fears
Wyatt’s Take
- Apple dropped apps that showed where ICE agents are working.
- The move came after officials warned these apps were putting law enforcement in danger.
- Some say this protects safety, while others call it unfair censorship.
Apple has taken down several apps from its store that tracked Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) movements. Officials asked Apple to make this decision out of concern for agent safety and rising violence against law enforcement.
The change followed news that a suspect allegedly used one of these apps before a deadly Dallas shooting targeting ICE agents. Attorney General Pam Bondi said her department told Apple these apps put officers at risk and needed to be removed.
“We reached out to Apple today demanding they remove the ICEBlock app from their App Store — and Apple did so,” Bondi said. “ICEBlock is designed to put ICE agents at risk just for doing their jobs, and violence against law enforcement is an intolerable red line that cannot be crossed.”
She added, “This Department of Justice will continue making every effort to protect our brave federal law enforcement officers, who risk their lives every day to keep Americans safe.”
Apple confirmed it pulled these tracking apps, calling the app store a “safe and trusted place to discover apps.” The company said, “Based on information we’ve received from law enforcement about the safety risks associated with ICEBlock, we have removed it and similar apps from the App Store.”
The creator of ICEBlock, Joshua Aaron, denied claims that his app was meant to harm law enforcement. “We are determined to fight this with everything we have,” Aaron said. “Our mission has always been to protect our neighbors from the terror this administration continues to reign down on the people of this nation.”
