  • He blamed his actions on drug use and exhaustion but took responsibility in court.
  • The flight crew kept everyone safe, stopping tragedy in the air.

A former Alaska Airlines pilot who tried to cut the engines during a 2023 flight will not go to prison. Judge Amy Baggio gave Joseph Emerson credit for time served and put him on supervised release for three years.

Emerson had pleaded guilty, reaching a deal with prosecutors who wanted a year of prison time. The judge said,

“Pilots are not perfect. They are human. They are people and all people need help sometimes.”

Emerson admitted regret for his actions in court.

“I’m not a victim. I am here as a direct result of my actions. I can tell you that this very tragic event has forced me to grow as an individual.”

In October 2023, Emerson was a passenger in the cockpit when he tried to pull the handles that would stop the engines. He said he had taken psychedelic mushrooms days before and had lost a friend.

Flight 2059, heading from Everett to San Francisco with 84 people on board, landed safely in Portland after crew members restrained Emerson. Federal prosecutors said,

“It was only through the heroic actions of the flight crew, who were able to physically restrain the defendant and restore normal operations of the aircraft, that no lives were lost that day.”

Emerson faced charges for interfering with the crew and endangering lives. He got credit for jail time served, community service, probation, and must pay over $60,000 in restitution to Alaska Air Group.

Strong hands and clear heads in the cockpit make all the difference. Stay tuned for more stories that hit close to home.
