January 1, Cardiologist Warns: Stay Safe Shoveling in Storms

Wyatt’s Take
- Shoveling during big winter storms can trigger heart trouble if done carelessly.
- Dr. Lawson says using a light shovel and taking frequent breaks is key.
- Stay alert for any unusual symptoms, and switch to a snowblower if you can.
When a fierce winter storm hits, many Americans have to clear their driveways and sidewalks. A leading heart doctor warns that shoveling snow can put folks at risk if they aren’t careful.
Dr. William Lawson, Director of Preventive Cardiology at Stony Brook Heart Institute, reminds people, “You want a light shovel, not a heavy shovel, because you’re going to have to lift it. Do more pushing.” His advice is to push snow rather than lift it to take the strain off the heart.
He also says to “take lots of breaks, stay hydrated.” Resting and drinking water are just as important as the shovel you choose.
Lawson suggests using a snowblower if possible. He also urges, “Listen to your body. If you have any palpitations, dizzy spells, chest discomfort, stop.” Don’t ignore warning signs during the job.
Cold weather puts extra strain on your heart, especially while doing heavy chores. Be smart about your health so you can take care of your family and get through the winter in one piece.
Wyatt Matters
When winter storms hit, protecting your health is just as important as digging out your driveway. Hard work is part of life in Middle America, but it’s wise to look out for warning signs and take breaks—it’s how you keep providing for those who count on you.
