January 1, Celebrity’s Secret Battle with Aggressive Illness Unveiled
Olivia Munn, the acclaimed 43-year-old actress, recently revealed her ongoing battle with breast cancer. Diagnosed in April 2023, she took to Instagram to share her journey, including images and details of her fight against this formidable adversary. Munn disclosed that her Breast Cancer Risk Assessment Score was found to be 37% by her doctor, leading to an MRI scan. The scan detected Luminal B cancer, a notably aggressive and fast-moving variant, in both her breasts.
“In February of 2023, in an effort to be proactive about my health, I took a genetic test that checks you for 90 different cancer genes,” Munn wrote on her Instagram post. “I tested negative for all, including BRCA (the most well-known breast cancer gene). My sister Sara had just tested negative as well. We called each other and high-fived over the phone. That same winter I also had a normal mammogram.”
“Two months later I was diagnosed with breast cancer.”
Following her diagnosis, Munn underwent four surgeries over the past ten months. Despite the emotional toll, she admitted to only having cried twice, stating, “I guess I haven’t felt like there was time to cry. My focus narrowed and I tabled any emotions that I felt would interfere with my ability to stay clearheaded.”
Munn chose to keep her diagnosis private, preferring to navigate through some of the most challenging aspects of her journey before sharing it with her fans. She expressed, “I’ve tended to let people see me when I have the energy, when I can get dressed and get out of the house, when I can take my baby boy to the park. I’ve kept the diagnosis and the worry and the recovery and the pain medicine and the paper gowns private.”
Despite her ongoing battle, Munn made a public appearance alongside her partner, comedian John Mulaney, at the 2024 Oscars on Sunday. She also attended the Governors Awards on Jan. 9 with Mulaney. The couple, first romantically linked in September 2021, welcomed their first child together in November 2021.
Mulaney, who has previously struggled with substance abuse, spoke highly of Munn during an appearance on “Late Night with Seth Meyers,” stating, “I got into this relationship that’s been really beautiful with someone incredible who has dealt with the non-coked-up Bambi version of me and that’s been very incredible. She’s kind of held my hand through that hell and we are having a baby together.”
Mulaney’s relationship with Munn began shortly after the end of his marriage to Anna Marie Tendler. The couple announced their separation in May 2021 following Mulaney’s stay in rehab. Tendler expressed her heartbreak over the end of their marriage in a statement, saying, “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage. I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.”
