January 1, SCANDAL: Federal Judge RESIGNS After Affair Bombshell Rocks Utah Redistricting Case

Wyatt’s Take

  • A Clinton-appointed federal judge just resigned after allegations surfaced that he was having an affair with a Democrat attorney involved in a major redistricting case he was overseeing.
  • The judge ordered Utah’s legislature-drawn maps thrown out and replaced with court-appointed “independent” maps — all while allegedly carrying on a secret relationship that compromised his impartiality.
  • This is exactly why Americans don’t trust the courts anymore: liberal judges playing politics from the bench while pretending to be neutral arbiters of justice.

A federal judge in Utah has resigned after being accused of conducting an affair with a Democrat attorney while presiding over a high-stakes redistricting lawsuit that challenged the state’s legislative maps. The judge, a Clinton appointee, made the stunning announcement as the controversy exploded into public view.

U.S. District Judge Robert Shelby resigned effective immediately, citing the need to protect his family from the media firestorm. In his resignation letter, he wrote:

“[M]y family and friends did not choose public life.”

Shelby’s resignation comes after he was hit with a judicial misconduct complaint alleging he had an inappropriate relationship with a female attorney representing Democratic plaintiffs in a case challenging Utah’s congressional districts. The case accused Utah Republicans of gerrymandering and sought to overturn maps drawn by the state legislature.

Here’s the kicker: Judge Shelby ruled in favor of the Democrats in that very case, ordering the legislature-drawn maps replaced with court-appointed “independent” maps. Now we know he may have been personally involved with someone on the Democrat side while making that decision.

The judicial misconduct complaint was filed in recent weeks, prompting an investigation. Rather than face the scrutiny, Shelby chose to step down. He did not explicitly admit to the affair in his resignation statement, but the timing speaks volumes.

Shelby was appointed to the federal bench by President Bill Clinton in 2012 and has a history of controversial rulings that angered conservatives in Utah. He previously struck down the state’s voter-approved ban on same-sex marriage, a decision that enraged traditional values advocates across the state.

The redistricting case has major implications for Utah politics. Republicans argued the maps fairly reflected the state’s overwhelmingly conservative voter base. Democrats claimed the maps diluted minority voting power and packed opposition voters into a single district.

With Shelby now off the case, questions swirl about what happens next. Will his rulings be revisited? Will the case be reassigned to a new judge? And most importantly, how long was this alleged affair going on while he was making consequential decisions affecting millions of Utahns?

Legal experts say the misconduct allegations could provide grounds for an appeal, especially if it can be shown that Shelby’s impartiality was compromised during the proceedings. Republicans in Utah are already calling for a full investigation and demanding transparency.

One Utah state representative told reporters:

“This is an absolute disgrace. The people of Utah deserve to know if this judge was making decisions based on the law or based on his personal relationships.”

The resignation is a black eye for the federal judiciary at a time when public trust in institutions is already at historic lows. Americans are sick of watching powerful people in Washington and the courts play by different rules while lecturing the rest of us about ethics and fairness.

Democrats have been largely silent on the scandal, with no major party figures calling for accountability or commenting on the allegations. That silence is deafening.

Wyatt Matters

This scandal is a perfect example of why working Americans have lost faith in the system. We’re told judges are impartial, that they follow the law without favor. But time and again, we see liberal judges twisting the rules, making political decisions, and now — allegedly — carrying on affairs with attorneys on cases they’re deciding. Hardworking families in Utah voted for those legislative maps through their elected representatives, and one judge threw them out. If he was compromised the whole time, every decision he made needs to be questioned. Justice isn’t supposed to be about who you’re sleeping with.

How does one get appointed by a president that left office in 2000, in 2015? A democratic one was there yes, just not that one.
