Senator Rick Scott of Florida is introducing new legislation aimed at stopping illegal tunnels that smugglers use to cross the southern border. The plan comes after reports show drug and human trafficking groups digging under the fence in growing numbers.

Scott says the law would give federal agents stronger tools and bigger penalties for anyone caught building or using the tunnels. Supporters believe it will finally close a loophole that lets cartels move people and drugs while Border Patrol is stuck watching the surface.

“We cannot allow criminal organizations to continue exploiting weaknesses along our southern border,” Scott stated in a release.

The tunnels have become a bigger problem as record numbers of migrants and fentanyl pour into the country. Border agents in Arizona and California have already found several new passages this year, some complete with lighting, rails, and even ventilation systems.

Scott’s bill would also increase funding for tunnel-detection technology and allow the military to assist when the threat reaches national-security levels.

Critics on the left call the measure unnecessary, claiming current laws already cover smuggling tunnels. Scott’s team points out those laws were written before the cartels started building underground highways the size of small subway lines.

Border communities have watched their towns turn into staging grounds for the smuggling trade. Local sheriffs say they lack the manpower and equipment to chase every tunnel on their own.

“This is about protecting American families from the poison and violence coming across that border every single day,” Scott added.
