January 1, Cold case specialists claim to have ID’d the Zodiac Killer
A team of cold-case investigative specialists claims to have identified the Zodiac Killer, one of the country’s most notorious serial murderers.
Authorities linked the Zodiac Killer, who they never caught, to at least five murders in the San Francisco area between 1968 and 1969. He taunted authorities by sending esoteric puzzles and letters to newspapers and law enforcement.
The group Case Breakers claims that the Zodiac is Gary Francis Poste, who died in 2018. The team’s research led them to new forensic evidence, including photos from Poste’s darkroom. One image allegedly shows scars on Poste’s forehead that match a sketch of the Zodiac.
Additionally, former Army counterintelligence agent Jen Bucholtz said using Poste’s name in one of the Zodiac’s inscrutable ciphers revealed a new message.
“So you’ve got to know Gary’s full name in order to decipher these anagrams,” Bucholtz said. “I just don’t think there’s any other way anybody would have figured it out.”
