The U.S. Senate has been in session just 79 days this year. That’s about 40% of the time. Meanwhile, hardworking Americans clock in five days a week, often more, just to keep food on the table and the lights on.

And what has this part-time Senate accomplished? Absolutely nothing on the issues that matter most. No election security. No spending cuts. No relief from crushing inflation. Not even a plan to stop another Democrat government shutdown.

Senator Rick Scott isn’t staying quiet about this disgrace. He’s calling out his colleagues — Republicans and Democrats alike — for treating the Senate like a country club instead of the urgent business it is.

“At the slow rate we are getting stuff done, we should be working 7 days,” Scott wrote. “It is crazy.”

Here’s the brutal truth: The Senate takes fewer than 10 votes a week. Senators roll in late Monday, vote a few times, then bolt for home Thursday afternoon. Fridays? Forget about it. Weekends? Never happens — even when critical deadlines loom.

The SAVE America Act — legislation to secure our elections with voter ID and ensure only American citizens can register to vote — still hasn’t passed. Republicans, Democrats, and Independents overwhelmingly support it. But the Senate can’t even agree on how to move forward.

Why? Because they’re too busy getting home for their four-day weekends.

“The job of a Senator used to be to arrive in Washington to debate, vote on, and accomplish all our agenda items before we allowed ourselves to go home,” Scott explained. “Sadly, that’s no longer the case.”

This isn’t a new problem. Under both Republican and Democrat leadership, the Senate has worked less and less every year. And Americans are paying the price for this lack of urgency.

There’s still no funding plan to prevent a Democrat shutdown. No spending cuts to bring down interest rates and inflation that are crushing family budgets. No action on the border crisis that’s flooding our communities with drugs and crime.

Scott pointed to the stark contrast between Washington elites and everyday Americans.

“America is the greatest country in the world. We have the strongest economy because of the workers who bust their butts every day to do their jobs, provide for their families, and achieve the American Dream,” he said.

“I think the Senate should demonstrate the kind of work ethic we depend on from the American people to keep our economy running.”

The Florida senator isn’t blaming one party. This is a decades-long decline into laziness and entitlement. Congress gets less productive every year because senators leave Thursday when there’s still work to be done.

“I’m sure we would all love to be home with our families as much as possible — every American probably feels that way — but that’s not the job we all asked our constituents to elect us to do,” Scott wrote.

“It’s certainly not the job that I promised the people of Florida. I told them I’d work as hard as I can to help them achieve the American Dream, stay safe, and live free.”

Time is running out before the November elections. Getting anything done means staying in Washington until the job is finished. It means sitting down and hammering out solutions instead of throwing up their hands and heading home.

“We can’t take ‘no’ for an answer, and we can’t stop just because it’s hard,” Scott declared.

He’s promising to take the fight directly to the Senate floor in coming weeks, bringing up the policies he campaigned on when Floridians elected him.

“Let’s fix the problem. Let’s stop flying home on Thursday after lunch, start voting more, and make good on our promises,” Scott urged. “That’s what the American people deserve.”

Why It Matters

While working families struggle through 40-hour weeks just to survive Biden’s inflation, the Senate can’t be bothered to show up. This isn’t about Republican versus Democrat — it’s about the swamp versus the people. Americans deserve representatives who work as hard as they do. If senators won’t put in the time, they don’t deserve the job. It’s that simple.
