January 1, Predictions Falter as Iran Operation Alters Global Markets

Wyatt’s Take
- Oil prices have surged, raising costs for American families at the pump.
- Fertilizer supplies are being squeezed by unrest in the Strait of Hormuz.
- Military and political shifts in the region are changing the outlook fast.
Pundits and talking heads on both sides of the aisle are finding out that war doesn’t follow a script. While some predicted smooth sailing, American families are seeing the reality at the gas pump and on the farm.
Oil prices have climbed steadily since Operation Epic Fury started, with crude closing at over ninety-eight dollars on Friday. This hit to the wallet comes as maritime traffic in the Strait of Hormuz ground to a halt following multiple attacks on merchant vessels.
Farmers are facing a dire situation because half of the world’s production of key fertilizer precursors passes through that same narrow chokepoint. Without these supplies, spring planting could be in jeopardy for heartland producers.
“We’re being told that many of our farmers that haven’t preordered their fertilizer and paid for it may not even obtain the fertilizer that they’re going to need.”
Despite the economic friction, the military landscape is shifting as Arab nations move to support the campaign. Even groups like Hamas have called for Iran to stop targeting neighboring countries after missile strikes hit Saudi Arabia and Jordan.
President Trump has recently paused strikes on Iranian energy infrastructure to allow for productive conversations regarding a resolution. The administration reports that these detailed discussions will continue throughout the week to find a path toward ending hostilities.
Wyatt Matters
Middle America knows that when global conflict breaks out, the bill usually lands on the kitchen table in the form of higher fuel and food costs. We value a strong national defense, but we expect our leaders to protect the stability of the heartland’s economy while they handle business abroad.
