  • She urges folks to ditch portable chargers and keep fire blankets handy.

A woman from Los Angeles woke up to chaos when her portable charger exploded while she slept, leaving her with burns and a ruined mattress.

She credits a fire blanket from her dad with saving her life, saying, “Make sure you have a fire blanket handy because it honestly saved my life, and I’m just grateful to be alive.”

When her phone lost power in the explosion, she couldn’t call 911 and had to run onto her balcony to shout for help. She was glad her neighbors acted fast and emergency responders arrived in three minutes.

She urged everyone to rethink using portable chargers, thinking about what might have happened if this was on an airplane. “What if I was on an airplane and that happened?” she asked. “Everyone is in danger with a small little charger and I never thought that was going to happen to me.”

She wrapped up by saying, “Yeah, throw away your portable chargers.”

Stay prepared and look out for each other—sometimes the little things can be the most dangerous.

I use a portable charger a lot of the time and have never had a problem. Sure, you might find one or two that are faulty but that’s true with everything. You can have brand new brake pads put on your car and the brakes still could fail due to faulty pads or a myriad of other reasons. You could have a certified electrician rewire your home and it could still burn down due to faulty wiring which would not be the electricians fault so long as he didn’t wire the home wrong or use clearly broken/cracked wires. There are many things that can go wrong in the modern world that would never have happened in earlier time periods or in homes that don’t use electricity (Amish come to immediate mind, although their homes could catch fire due to wood burning stoves or kerosene lanterns).

Nearly every small rechargeable electronic item requires USB block plugged into an outlet. How do you get around that.
