January 1, Hochul Turns Down Aid as Cold Claims Homeless Lives

Wyatt’s Take
- Three homeless New Yorkers died after a deep freeze hit the city.
- Governor Hochul said no to federal help unless immigration policies changed.
- Authorities say the cold likely killed, not foul play.
Three homeless people died in New York City after freezing temperatures set in Saturday morning. Governor Hochul refused federal storm aid, asking first for changes to how immigration enforcement is handled in the city.
“Secretary Noem offered assistance to New York ahead of the impending snowstorm,” Hochul wrote on X. “I shared that the fastest way to help is for ICE to back off so people feel safe accessing warming centers, shelters, hospitals, and houses of worship.”
Early that morning, emergency crews found a 67-year-old man outside on 3rd Avenue in Murray Hill, a 64-year-old woman in Canarsie, Brooklyn, and a man in his 30s on Warren Street in Cobble Hill. Police think all three were homeless, and no foul play was suspected. The city’s medical examiner will say for sure what happened, but weather is the likely cause.
The deaths came even after Mayor Mamdani said the city’s Code Blue was in effect, meaning shelter beds were open to anyone.
“No one will be denied,” Mamdani said. “All hospitals, all Department of Homeless Services (DHS) drop-in centers, and all DHS shelters have a fully open-door policy.”
The mayor called this cold snap the worst in about eight years. The Trump administration’s emergency team had made food, water, and power generators ready for states hit by the storm.
These tragic deaths show what tough weather and political fights can mean for folks with nowhere to go. We have to put saving lives ahead of arguing over rules. That’s what Middle America expects from its leaders.
Wyatt Matters
These stories remind us that caring for the vulnerable takes common sense and heart. In times of crisis, Americans look out for each other—no politics, just decency. That’s the value we carry in every small town and city street.

It is both sad and disgusting that this woman is trying to use the plight of homeless people as leverage to force President Trump and the government to change their stance on immigration rules and the use of ICE in enforcement of arresting and returning illegal aliens to their own countries, especially those who are dangerous. Obviously getting her own way is more important than preventing deaths in the homeless community. She is lacking in compassion and human kindness.
