January 1, Tennessee Town Stunned by Zebra Ed’s Wild Chase
Wyatt’s Take
- A pet zebra named Ed escaped in Tennessee and led deputies on an eight-day chase.
- The sheriff’s office used helicopters and drones to track him before a dramatic rescue.
- Lane closures were needed for safety as Ed roamed near busy highways.
For over a week, folks in Rutherford County kept their eyes peeled as a zebra wandered across fields and roadways. Deputies and aviation crews worked night and day, finally reuniting Ed with his owner after a daring rescue.
“Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is happy to report Tango 82 aviation crews located Zebra Ed and returned him to his owner Sunday,” read an online announcement. The animal’s spree started after he got loose near Interstate 24, close to Buchanan Estates.
Helicopter crews managed to spot “Zebra Ed” in a wooded area and lifted him to safety. He had arrived in Christiana on May 30 and disappeared the next day. His owner quickly reported him missing, but officials never shared where Ed was kept or how he got away.
Deputies shut down several traffic lanes when Ed dashed across the interstate, aiming to keep drivers safe. After days with no sign of the zebra, deputies saw him again using a drone last Friday in a nearby field. Working cautiously, teams and a vet made sure the animal stayed calm for the rescue.
“We don’t want to scare the zebra,” explained RCSO Cpl. Sean White. “We need time to get him to calm down.” What happens next for Ed remains unclear, but locals are relieved he’s now safe and sound.
Heartland folks know the bond between people and their animals runs deep. This wild journey brought neighbors together and showed just how far folks will go to protect what’s theirs.

Zebras for pets?
I guess if you can keep a horse for a pet, a zebra makes a good one. Strange pet, but still a good one.
