January 1, Walmart’s Bold Expansion Plan Revamps Stores Adds Health Centers and Dining Options
Earlier this year, retail giant Walmart unveiled an ambitious plan to revamp 650 stores across the United States by the end of 2024. The strategy entails not just transformations of existing stores, but also the construction and conversions of 150 new ones over the course of the next five years. The plan sees the company extending its influence into new avenues, announcing new health centers, grocery stores, and fast-casual restaurants nationwide.
This news follows the sudden closure of Walmart’s 51 health centers this April due to escalating operational costs and reimbursement problems. These health centers, concentrated largely in Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, Missouri, Texas, and Illinois, had been providing low-cost services to the community. Nevertheless, not all is lost, as a silver lining has appeared in the form of a partnership with health insurance provider Humana.
Through this alliance, 23 of the previously closed locations are set to reopen as senior primary care centers under the CenterWell Senior Primary Care and Conviva Care Centers brands. These centers are anticipated to open by the first half of 2025, and are targeted towards locations in Florida, Georgia, Missouri, and Texas.
Sanjay Shetty, MD, president of CenterWell, expressed his excitement about the partnership. He highlighted the company’s commitment to provide seniors with comprehensive, accessible, and most importantly, personalized healthcare. This exciting venture aims to provide the senior demographics of these four states increased access to CenterWell’s integrated approach to care.
Simultaneously, Walmart is expanding its grocery section with the introduction of more Neighborhood Market locations. As part of the company’s overall growth strategy, these new stores will be larger and have a wider selection of food offerings.
The first two of these sizable Neighborhood Markets are slated to open in Santa Rosa Beach, Florida, and Atlanta. At a grand size of 57,000 square feet, these markets are significantly larger than the average Neighborhood Market.
Shoppers can look forward to enhanced services in bakery, produce, meat and dairy departments. The company is prioritizing customer experience by expanding its service deli to offer more hot case options. Other upgrades include wider aisles, additional pickup and delivery spaces, and a Health Services Room for private vaccinations and consultations situated next to the pharmacy.
In a bid to further enhance shopping experience, Walmart is also partnering with Crave Hot Dogs & BBQ to add in-store fast-casual dining options. Known as Walmart Crave, these outlets will cater to customers for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. Food can be ordered in-store or through the Crave app, Grubhub, or DoorDash.
This follows on the heels of Walmart announcing partnerships with Mr. Gatti’s Pizza, Uncle Sharkii Poke Bar, and Wetzel’s Pretzels – all set to open locations within Walmart stores. Clearly, Walmart is not resting on its laurels but is instead, striving to provide its customers with a holistic, all-in-one shopping experience.
