“The View” cohost Whoopi Goldberg is once again facing backlash after saying that the Holocaust “wasn’t originally” about race.

The fresh round of backlash marks the second time this year that Goldberg has faced ire for what Holocaust experts and Jewish leaders say are historically inaccurate and offensive comments about the killing of 6 million European Jews from 1933 to 1945.

During an interview with the U.K. newspaper The Sunday Times, the reporter referenced Goldberg’s comments from earlier this year, where she claimed that the Holocaust was “not about race.” The remarks, made on-air in January, sparked immediate backlash and resulted in her being suspended from “The View” for two weeks. Goldberg issued a statement of apology on social media.

“Nazis saw Jews as a race,” the reporter said, referring to Goldberg’s previous comments.

“Yes, but that’s the killer, isn’t it?” Goldberg responded. “The oppressor is telling you what you are. Why are you believing them? They’re Nazis. Why believe what they’re saying?”

Goldberg continued, saying that it “wasn’t originally” about race. “Remember who they were killing first. They were not killing racial; they were killing physical. They were killing people they considered to be mentally defective. And then they made this decision.” 

The reporter pointed out that “the Nazis measured the heads and noses of Jews to ‘prove’ they were a distinct race.” Goldberg replied: “They did that to Black people too. But it doesn’t change the fact that you could not tell a Jew on a street. You could find me. You couldn’t find them. That was the point I was making. But you would have thought that I’d taken a big old stinky dump on the table, butt naked.”

Goldberg’s comments sparked backlash.

Anti-Defamation League (ADL) chief Jonathan Greenblatt called Goldberg’s remarks “deeply offensive and incredibly disappointing.”

“Whoopi Goldberg’s comments about the Holocaust and race are deeply offensive and incredibly disappointing, especially given that this is not the first time she had made remarks like this,” Greenblatt said in a statement. “In a moment when antisemitic incidents have surged across the US, she should realize that making such ignorant statements can have real consequences.”

The Auschwitz-Birkenau Memorial and Museum tweeted a passage from a letter Adolf Hitler wrote in 1919, in which he stated that “Jews are definitely a race” and referred to Jewish people as an “alien race, unable and unwilling to sacrifice its racial distinctiveness.”

Lucy Lipiner, a survivor of the Holocaust, condemned the remarks. She tweeted: “Whoopi Goldberg continues to use the Holocaust as her punching bag. We told her that her comments harm us and she simply doesn’t care. I survived the Nazis and the Holocaust, so I’ll be damned if I let a comedy has-been, peddling a fake Jewish name get the better of me.”

Goldberg issued another apology statement after the interview sparked criticism.

“It was never my intention to appear as if I was doubling down on hurtful comments, especially after talking with and hearing people like rabbis and old and new friends weighing in,” Goldberg said. “I’m still learning a lot and believe me, I heard everything everyone said to me. I believe that the Holocaust was about race, and I am still as sorry now as I was then that I upset, hurt and angered people.”
