January 1, White House: Millions of Households Eligible for Free Internet
The White House announced that 20 internet service providers have agreed to offer $30 high-speed internet plans to low-income households — effectively giving free internet access to millions of families through the Affordable Connectivity Program (ACP).
The ACP provides low-income households with a $30 monthly discount for internet service from the 1,000+ participating providers — including Verizon, Comcast, and Charter, which cover more than 80% of the U.S. population.
“ACP eligible families who choose to apply their ACP benefit to one of these plans will get high-speed internet at no monthly cost,” a senior Biden administration official said.
Up to 48 million families qualify for the program, but only about 11.5 million have signed up.
