January 1, WATCH: Man Lunges at Buffalo Gunman During Tense Sentencing
The man who killed 10 people in a racially-motivated rampage at a Buffalo grocery store was sentenced to life in prison without parole on Wednesday.
Payton Gendron’s sentencing was briefly interrupted after a man in the audience charged at him during victim impact statements.
Barbara Mapps, whose sister Katherine Massey was one of the 10 people killed in the shooting at the Tops Friendly Market on May 14, was giving an emotional statement, raising her voice and using explicit language toward Gendron.
It was during Mapps’ emotional statement that a man ran in from behind her and lunged at Gendron. The man was stopped by several officers before he could reach the the gunman. The sentencing hearing was resumed after about 10 minutes, with more emotional testimony from the survivors of the shooting and relatives of victims.
Erie County District Attorney John Flynn later said that the man who lunged at Gendron will not be charged.
In a brief statement, Gendron said he “shot and killed people because they were Black.”
“I believed what I read online and acted out of hate, and now I can’t take it back, but I wish I could, and I don’t want anyone to be inspired by me,” he said.
Gendron’s attack was motivated by racist conspiracy theories he found online. He wore bullet-resistant armor and a helmet equipped with a livestreaming camera as he carried out the attack on May 14 with a semiautomatic rifle. The weapon had been purchased legally, but modified so he could load it with high-capacity ammunition magazines that are illegal in New York.
In an online document, Gendron wrote that he hoped the attack would help preserve white power in America. He also wrote that he selected the Tops Friendly Market because it was in a predominantly Black area. The store was about three hours away from his home in Conklin, New York.
“You’ve been brainwashed,” Wayne Jones Sr., the only child of victim Celestine Chaney, told Gendron during his impact statement. “You don’t even know Black people that much to hate them. You learned this on the internet, and it was a big mistake.”
Gendron, 19, was sentenced to life in prison without parole on state charges related to the attack, including domestic act of terrorism motivated by hate as well as 10 counts of first degree murder. He pleaded guilty to the crimes in November.
“There can be no mercy for you, no understanding, no second chances,” Judge Susan Eagan said as she handed down the sentence.
Gendron faces separate federal charges that could possibly carry a death sentence, if the U.S. Justice Department elects to seek it. He is prepared to plead guilty in federal court also to avoid capital punishment, his attorney said in December.

If and I say IF you wanted a piece of this degenerate, the way to have done it would have one person lunge drawing the majority of cops away from him. Then QUICKLY move on him. You still wouldn’t have much time but you could have reached him. But it would need to be “unplanned’ and spontaneous.

He did plead guilty to avoid the death penalty , if you plead guilty for some dumb reason you can’t be executed ! Go figure ! Sucks I know , our wonderful laws !

When murderers are executed at a 95-99% rate, mass shootings will be few and far between as they should be. It IS that simple. Gun control laws are in the books. Criminals don’t follow the law no matter how well written it is. DUH! The threat of SWIFT execution is clearly the most effective deterrent of gun crime. I’m pretty sure the authorities know this, but they are too afraid of the criminals to make the decision to execute any murderer whose actions are clearly premeditated. I’m all for offering a murderer an opportunity to ask God for forgiveness just before we execute them. Either they come to their senses and ask for the only forgiveness that matters in eternity, or else they can reject God’s offer openly. Ultimately, one option will usher them into an eternal Hell far beyond any human understanding of pain from which there is no escape, while the other one will lead them to a place of eternal bliss far beyond any human understanding of happiness. Pick the happy place option and die once, or pick the other one and die TWICE. It should be a no brainer. Unfortunately, 95-99% of these killers don’t have a properly functioning brain since they premeditate to kill a group of people because they are angry. The other 1-5% are either verifiably satanic, or else they are highly paid professional assassins. Either way they SHOULD all suffer the same SWIFT penalty of forfeiting their very own lives. Penalty of Death makes most people think twice before even attempting to kill another person.
