US Renames 5 Sites with “Harmful” Names

1817: José de San Martín leads a revolutionary army over the Andes to attack Spanish royalists in Chile.

The U.S. government has renamed five places that previously included a “historically racist term,” NBC News reported.

The U.S. Department of Interior announced that it renamed five sites in California, North Dakota, Tennessee, and Texas, over the term “squaw.”

“Words matter, particularly in our work to ensure our nation’s public lands and waters are accessible and welcoming to people of all backgrounds,” Haaland said in a statement, calling the word “harmful.”

In September 2021, U.S. Interior Secretary Deb Haaland declared “squaw” to be a derogatory term, announcing that she had started the process to remove the term from more than 600 federal sites.

In North Dakota, Squaw Gap was renamed to Homesteaders Gap. But the change sparked outcry from the local residents.

A member of the McKenzie County Board of Commissioners said many residents were strongly opposed to the name change.

“Generally we find they’re disconnected from what the culture and economy are out here,” said Joel Brown, referring to the community’s feelings on federal government interference.

But a local tribal chairman applauded the move, telling the Associated Press that change was long overdue, and “we are pleased that the racially insensitive and offensive name has been removed.”

Boo hoo! I am Native American, Chrokee and Sioux and as far as I am concerned these people need to get over it! You dwell on the past and in spite of my ancestors being slaughtered I used that negativity toward making something of myself in my education, career, society, and volunteer work.

I am sick to death of the woke and will continue to go against you morons, elders and tribes that try to pull the BS victim garbage in this fay and age. Quit hitting the bottle, get off welfare, and start bringing something new and positive to society. Besides the blacks playing the race card the Native Americans are starting to follow suit. You people are pathetic! No wonder my grandfather got so disgusted and left the tribe. What a bunch of crybabies!

I would think these politicians would be more interested in getting prices down or securing our border or maybe making our cities safer!!! There are more important things happythen to worry if a word offends someone!!! These clowns are elected officials to represent the PEOPLE!!! Seems like by the article these so called politicians didn’t consider asking if the PEOPLE wanted the name changed!!! Typical government do want they want not what the people want!!!! A government for the people by the people no longer exists!!!!!

You are absolutely correct. They are destroying our history (names, statues, etc.). They even try to rewrite our history in books and textbooks.

  2. Jr says:

    They need to get
Over it and renaming these sites is all she has to do, what work has she done? She needs
To stop this nonsense and do a job for the American people

  3. Margo says:

I’m not native, but did marry a couple of fellows who are 1/4 over the years, & taught my boys to be proud of their ancestry. When I collect little bits of firewood I say I’m collecting squaw wood. It’s not a put down to anyone, but a fond reminder of days gone by.

  4. Bluefish123 says:

Trying to change the past by grading it on todays standards is both ignorant and ridiculous. These woke morons doing so need to be silenced and shown to be the buffoons they are.
