- America signals support for new leadership
Honduran election officials have declared Nasry Asfura the winner of the presidential race, almost a month after the vote.
President Donald Trump had endorsed Asfura, making clear the U.S. would rather not keep supporting leaders who don’t share American priorities.
Asfura took home 40.27% of the ballots, just edging out Salvador Nasralla, who got 39.39%.
In a post, Asfura said, “I am prepared to govern. I will not let you down. God bless Honduras.”
South America also saw Chile elect a conservative, José Antonio Kast, showing a trend toward right-leaning leaders across the region.
Current leader Xiomara Castro’s party came in third place, seen as a rejection of her socialist agenda.
“The people of Honduras have spoken: Nasry Asfura is Honduras’ next president,” Secretary of State Marco Rubio said. “The United States congratulates President-Elect [Asfura] and looks forward to working with his administration to advance prosperity and security in our hemisphere.”
