Wyatt’s Take

  • The White House is struggling to decide how to spend a massive new defense budget increase.
  • Some top officials worry about overspending and strain on priorities.
  • Americans will see record money spent on the military—over $1.5 trillion.

The Trump administration hasn’t figured out where all the extra money in the new defense budget will go yet. A nearly $600 billion jump is on the table, but plans to split up the cash are still unfinished.

President Trump agreed to raise military spending to $1.5 trillion for 2027, up from $900 billion the year before. Some inside the administration, like OMB Director Russ Vought, have concerns about the huge rise and its effect on the nation’s debt.

Logistics are stalling talks as staff from the White House and Pentagon try to allocate the big budget boost. This delay has already set back the budget’s submission to Congress by over two weeks.

Retired Marine Corps Col. Mark Cancian called it unusual for the Pentagon to want such a large increase while lessening focus outside the Western Hemisphere.

“If you’ve got a 50 percent budget increase, you don’t have to do any of that. You’d be talking about all the new places you’d making investments.”

The $1.5 trillion defense budget far exceeds major Democrat domestic programs, such as the Medicare expansion, which is only $350 billion.

War Secretary Pete Hegseth promoted the budget jump at Lockheed Martin, calling it a sign America is “rebuilding the arsenal of freedom.”

“We had a historic budget last year. I don’t know if you saw, the president announced the goal of $1.5 trillion for our national defense budget in 2027. That is a message to the world.”

Big changes are coming to military spending, but how those dollars shake out is still up in the air. Stay tuned for more facts as they unfold.
