January 1, Trump’s Big Bill Targets Broken Air Traffic Control

The current air traffic control system in America is outdated and unsafe, according to Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy. He said at a policy event that the country needs $31.5 billion to modernize old equipment, but Congress approved $12.5 billion for starters.

“The Congress in One Big Beautiful Bill gave us $12.5 billion, and they were very specific about how we could use that money. It’s for new radar, radios, the key part of this goes back to what happened in Newark,” Duffy explained at the event.

He described a recent outage in Newark, showing how ancient telecom equipment can cause dangerous delays and why the system needs to move from copper wires to digital fiber. Duffy emphasized that the Trump administration is pushing for newer technology and automation as quickly as possible.

The President is fully backing the project, saying he knows the dangers of relying on old tech in America’s airspace. Duffy noted Trump has given “100 percent support” for fixing air traffic control.

The plan includes replacing aging telecom with new fiber, wireless, and satellite systems at thousands of sites, bringing in thousands of new radios and switches, updating hundreds of radars, and building needed control towers. Runway safety will rise by adding the Surface Awareness Initiative at more airports, and Alaska will benefit from dozens of new weather stations.

New control centers will also be built for the first time in decades, and all the air traffic centers, towers, and radar sites will get better hardware and software so everything works together across the nation.

Duffy summed it up: “We can talk about politics all day long, blame on the shutdown, what’s great about this issue is this is bipartisan. Everybody agrees this has to be done.”
