They’re saying all the chief information officers, or CIOs, shouldn’t have the “career reserved” status anymore. What does that mean? Well, it makes it easier to replace them with people who will help get the president’s work done.

The OPM wants all agencies to ask by February 14, 2025, to change these CIO roles to ‘general’ terms. This means these jobs can be filled by different types of people, not just career folks.

Mark Forman, who was in charge of IT under President George W. Bush, said Trump might still want to check how government works and make it better. They want to fix the messy data to make sure the government spends money wisely.
