  • Trump tells Honduras not to alter election results
  • The race is razor-thin, and vote counting is paused at 57%
  • Future of Honduras’ government and U.S. ties at stake

President Donald Trump jumped into Honduras’ tight presidential election, warning of consequences if officials change the vote tally.

Trump posted on Truth Social accusing election officials of shifting results, claiming, “If they do, there will be hell to pay! The people of Honduras voted in overwhelming numbers on November 30th.”

This message arrived as the president of the National Electoral Council said their initial vote reporting paused at 57% counted.

The main fight is between Nasry Asfura from the National Party and Salvador Nasralla from the Liberal Party. Asfura holds a slim lead. Rixi Moncada, the leftist LIBRE candidate, is far behind.

“It is imperative that the Commission finish counting the Votes,” Trump said. “Hundreds of thousands of Hondurans must have their Votes counted. Democracy must prevail!”

Officials promised to keep counting but gave no exact timing for new totals. During the pause, Trump’s endorsement of Asfura added tension. Trump called Asfura the only candidate he’d work with and pledged support against “narco-communists.” Both leading contenders point to the close margin but have not declared victory.

Trump also promised to pardon former Honduran President Juan Orlando Hernández, who is serving a long prison sentence in the U.S. That pledge weighs heavy on the election. The closely watched outcome will shape Honduras’ path and its relationship with the U.S.
