January 1, Trump Targets Dangerous Trucking Schools

Wyatt’s Take

  • The Trump administration is moving to shut down thousands of truck driving schools that don’t meet tough new standards.
  • This crackdown follows a string of deadly crashes linked to illegal migrant drivers with questionable training.
  • DOT says schools failing to meet the rules will lose certification fast.

The Department of Transportation is planning to revoke certification from nearly 3,000 Commercial Driver’s License schools for not training drivers properly. This decision comes as the White House responds to fatal highway crashes allegedly caused by illegal migrant truck drivers.

Another 4,500 schools are on notice that they could soon face the same fate if they don’t improve. Affected schools must tell their students their certification is at risk.

“This administration is cracking down on every link in the illegal trucking chain,” said Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy.

He added, “Under Joe Biden and Pete Buttigieg, bad actors were able to game the system and let unqualified drivers flood our roadways.”

Other infractions, like falsified training records and poor paperwork, are getting schools kicked off the official Training Provider Registry. Those that got a warning have 30 days to shape up or be removed.

Recent accidents getting national attention involve unqualified drivers. In one case, an illegal migrant took a U-turn on a busy turnpike, resulting in a tragic crash that killed three people. Another similar accident in California caused more loss of life.

The Trump administration now requires non-citizens to have their immigration status checked before they earn a commercial license. States that don’t comply could lose federal money.

“If you are unwilling to follow the rules, you have no place training America’s commercial drivers. We will not tolerate negligence,” said Derek Barrs, head of the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration.

It’s a direct effort to make American roads safer by keeping unfit drivers out of big rigs and school buses.
