Wyatt’s Take

  • Trump says poll numbers are highest ever, but law blocks third term.
  • Constitution’s 22nd Amendment limits presidents to two terms.
  • Speculation about Trump returning in 2028 dismissed by him and allies.

President Trump told reporters it’s clear he’s “not allowed to run” for a third term, even though he’s seeing his best poll numbers yet.

“I have my highest poll numbers that I’ve ever had, and, you know, based on what I read, I guess I’m not allowed to run. So, we’ll see what happens,” Trump said, speaking to reporters on Air Force One.

He mentioned the Constitution makes it plain: “I’m not allowed to run. It’s too bad, but we have a lot of great people.”

The 22nd Amendment says presidents can only serve two terms. This rule came after FDR held office for four terms.

Questions about another Trump run in 2028 popped up recently, especially after Steve Bannon spoke of a “plan” to keep Trump in office, though no details were shared.

When asked about Bannon’s idea, Trump said, “I’d love to” run again but hadn’t “really thought about it.”

He pointed to others in the party as strong options: “We have JD [Vance] obviously — the vice president is great. Marco [Rubio]’s great. I’m not sure if anybody would run against those two. I think if they formed a group it would be unstoppable.”

Trump also dismissed the idea of serving as vice president in 2028 and then stepping up: “I’d be allowed to do that. But I wouldn’t do it. It’s too cute. I think the people wouldn’t like that. It wouldn’t be right.”

House Speaker Mike Johnson said he’s talked with Trump about these limits, noting, “I think the president knows — and he and I’ve talked about the constrictions of the Constitution, as much as so many of the American people lament that.”

This story puts the spotlight back on who will step up for the future of America, as rules set long ago still hold strong today.

Wyatt Matters

For folks in the heartland, the law should be crystal clear and apply to everyone the same. The idea of limits on power matters because it keeps things fair and honest, just like we expect in our own communities.
