January 1, Trump Freezes Minnesota Child Care Funds over Fraud

The Trump administration has stopped sending federal child care funds to Minnesota. This comes after officials found strong evidence Somali-owned child care centers were taking millions through fraud.
Jim O’Neil, deputy secretary at the Department of Health and Human Services, announced,
“We’re committed to holding bad actors accountable, regardless of rank or office.”
He warned that anyone involved in cheating the system should expect to face legal charges. The freeze puts pressure on Minnesota and other states to check for fraud in their programs, especially those serving immigrant groups shaped by federal migration policies.
Crooked operators hide behind their tight-knit communities, making it hard to spot the con. Years of news reports pointed to problems, but Democrats hid the full story until recently. More proof came when an independent journalist filmed several empty daycares in Minnesota.
O’Neil explained,
“Intrepid journalists have made shocking and credible allegations of extensive fraud in Minnesota’s child care programs. We believe the state of Minnesota has allowed scammers and fake daycares to siphon millions of taxpayer dollars over the past decade.”
Alex Abrams from the Administration for Children and Families added,
“My office, ACF, provides Minnesota $185 million in child care funds each year. That money should be helping 19,000 American children, including toddlers and infants. Any dollars stolen by fraudsters is stolen from those children.”
He spoke to the director of Minnesota’s Child Care office, who couldn’t say whether the fraud is minor or widespread. O’Neil said new steps are happening right now: all states must now show photo proof for payments, and he demanded Minnesota fully review their centers and records at every level.
Abrams made it clear:
“ACF expects every state to uphold the highest standards of oversight, monitoring, and accountability for federal dollars — Minnesota is no exception.”
This move will likely push honest child care providers to demand answers from state leaders, finally bringing the issue out in the open. Minnesota must now prove it can protect American families and tax dollars.
