January 1, Trump Dominates DeSantis in 2024 GOP Primary, Even in Florida, New Poll Reveals

A recent poll shows former President Donald Trump holding a substantial lead over Governor Ron DeSantis in the 2024 Republican primary, even amongst voters in DeSantis’ home state of Florida.

The study, conducted by the Florida Atlantic University Mainstreet PolCom Lab, indicates that if the GOP presidential primary were held today, Governor DeSantis would garner 30.2 percent of the vote, a respectable score in the context of the broad field of candidates.

However, Trump trumps him with a commanding 50.3 percent of statewide primary voters, exceeding DeSantis by a striking margin of over 20 percent.

FAU political science professor Kevin Wagner provided further insight into these numbers, saying, “The poll highlights Donald Trump’s quite durable support. He does especially well with white working-class voters, who have consistently formed a steadfast base for the former President. This persistent support continues to bolster Trump’s strong and steady position within the party.”

Further illustrating Trump’s enduring dominance in the GOP, the poll found that nearly one in five Republicans believe it would be “disloyal” to support any other candidate.

These results further question DeSantis’ potential to rival Trump, despite his recent gains.

However, it’s not all grim for Governor DeSantis.

The gap between him and Trump has shrunk by seven percent since the last FAU and Mainstreet poll in April.

Coupled with DeSantis’ current approval rating of 54 percent among Floridians, the contest could continue to tighten as we approach 2024.

The poll also examined potential matchups against President Joe Biden. Trump was favored to win, with 49 percent to Biden’s 39 percent.

DeSantis outperformed even these strong numbers, leading Biden 49 percent to 36 percent in a hypothetical matchup.

Bottom Line

Despite these positive indications for DeSantis, the poll strongly suggests Trump remains the Republican frontrunner.

His sustained popularity among the GOP base and the high degree of loyalty he commands hint at his strong chances in the potential 2024 contest.

Damn man! I like DeSantis but I also like Trump! I wish DeSantis had not chosen to run for 2024. If he loses the Primary I hope it doesn’t hurt him for next election. (But I do wish that Repubs would just cut out the name-calling and run a clean campaign. I guess that’s the name of the game though.)
