  • Old border grudges flare up, but peace is back on for now.
  • Trade deals may hinge on everyone keeping the peace.

President Trump stepped in after violence erupted again between Cambodia and Thailand, convincing both leaders to stop shooting and honor a deal made earlier this year.

The border fighting had forced many families from their homes, but Trump’s phone calls led to both prime ministers agreeing to a fresh truce starting Friday evening.

Trump said the two had agreed to stop fighting and stick to the earlier peace agreement hammered out with America and Malaysia’s help.

Last weekend’s fighting started after a deadly attack at the border, with each country blaming the other for gunfire first.

Trump also thanked Malaysia’s leader for helping bring both sides to the table and didn’t rule out using tariffs if the neighbors fight again.

At that October meeting in Malaysia, Trump scored trade wins too, getting tariffs dropped on American goods, but new violence tested the fragile peace.

The border dispute goes back more than a century, making any agreement hard to keep.
