Two people are dead tonight, including an innocent infant, after a boat capsized near Liberty Island in New York Harbor late Saturday. Twelve others were pulled from the dark waters in a frantic rescue operation.
The NYPD responded to reports of an overturned vessel around 10:25 p.m. By the time officers arrived, a dozen passengers had already been rescued from the water by good Samaritans and first responders.
But the worst was yet to come. NYPD divers located an adult woman and a baby in the frigid harbor waters. Both were rushed to NYU Langone Hospital in Brooklyn in critical condition, but doctors couldn’t save them. Their identities haven’t been released, leaving families in anguish and a community demanding answers.
Several other passengers were also transported to area hospitals. Police say they’re believed to be in stable condition, but the emotional scars from watching loved ones disappear beneath the waves will last a lifetime.
Authorities identified the vessel as a 22-foot bowrider. What caused it to capsize remains under investigation, and no arrests have been made.
The NYPD’s Harbor Unit, Scuba Team, and Aviation Unit all responded, along with the U.S. Coast Guard. It was an all-hands-on-deck operation in the shadow of the Statue of Liberty — that beacon of hope and freedom now witness to unspeakable tragedy.

As someone that grew up on a lake in the state of Maine, I was thinking the exact same thing.. They must’ve all been sitting on each other‘s laps.

There should not have been that many people on a 22 foot boat. Too much weight on one side or the other could easily capsize a small boat like that. So sad.

For what reason was that boat out at night?
Having been to the Statue of Liberty during daylight hours this makes me wonder, probably more than others, the reason this boatload of people were out at night. Were these some illegals who keep entering our country without invitation?

Let us hope that the ones who caused the sinking of a boat during night time hours and the death of an infant will receive the harshest punishment allowed by law. I am including the parents of the infant and anyone other adult. Anyone with a brain should know that 12 people on a 22 ft. boat in those waters is a disaster looking for a place to happen. If there was an illegal act going on such as an illegal border crossing run, those responsiable should all be charged and convicted with manslaughter. The only ones I have any sympathy for are the infant and any other juveniles who were on board.

BOATING LAWS WERE NOT FOLLOWED!!!
A 22 foot boat does not have capacity for 12 passengers.
ALL the people should have worn flotation vests on that nighttime trip.
We used to have a 24 foot Sea Ray cruiser that even had an inside galley, head, seating that converted to beds, etc…
As spacious as it seemed to us, the passenger capacity stayed was 8!!!!
Also, I’m betting that MOST of the people on the ill-fated boat were overweight/fat and it was just far too much for such a small boat to handle.
The boating industry, boater clubs and magazines, Fish & Game, etc need to aggressively educate people about safety.
