January 1, Texas Senate Race Heats Up With Last-Minute Entry
Wyatt’s Take
- Rep. Jasmine Crockett jumps into the Texas Senate race with a big announcement from Dallas.
- Crockett says she’s running to fight against Donald Trump and defend the American dream.
- Her campaign sets the stage for a heated contest with Republicans fighting for control of the Senate.
Rep. Jasmine Crockett, a Democrat from Texas known for sharp criticism of President Trump, has entered the Senate race at the last minute. She told supporters she wants to take on Trump and says Republican Sen. John Cornyn won’t stand up to him.
“I’m done watching the American dream on life support while Trump tries to pull the plug. The gloves have been off, and now I’m jumping into the ring,” Crockett said.
She explained that she joined the race late after seeing poll results showing support for her Senate run. Crockett said she could have played it safe but decided the moment was too important for Texas families.
“Many people asked, ‘Can we win this race in November? I’m here to say, ‘Yes, we can!’” she told the crowd, borrowing a famous phrase from former President Obama, whom she praised.
Crockett emphasized Texas is full of tough folks who deserve better leaders. She assured voters she checked the numbers closely before making her choice to run.
The Democratic field is now down to Crockett and state Rep. James Talarico after Colin Allred left the Senate race to seek a House seat. This sets up a face-off between two Democrats with strong fundraising power.
Talarico said, “We’re building a movement in Texas — fueled by record-breaking grassroots fundraising and 10,000 volunteers who are putting in the work to defeat the billionaire mega-donors and puppet politicians who have taken over our state. Our movement is rooted in unity over division — so we welcome Congresswoman Crockett into this race.”
The Texas Democratic Party’s chairman praised the competitive primary, saying it shows the party is fighting for working-class people.
On the Republican side, Sen. Cornyn, Attorney General Ken Paxton, and Rep. Wesley Hunt are battling in their own tough primary, which could lead to a runoff if no one reaches above 50% of the vote.
The stage is set for a high-stakes election as both parties push to control Texas and the Senate.
Wyatt Matters
The fight for the Senate comes down to who speaks for Texas families and stands up for their beliefs. This race will test whether Texans want more of the same or leaders with their boots on the ground, ready to defend local values and everyday workers.
