Wyatt’s Take

  • Trash talk from Latvia sparks US Open showdown
  • Townsend stands tall after heated on-court spat
  • Debate erupts over class, race and respect in sports

Tempers flared at the US Open after American tennis standout Taylor Townsend upset former French Open champ Jelena Ostapenko in the second round.

The real fireworks exploded during a tense exchange in the middle of Court 11 after the match.

Ostapenko, representing Latvia, allegedly told Townsend she had “no class” and “no education”—words the American wasted no time repeating to the press.

“There’s no beef on my side,” Townsend said. “She told me I have no education, no class, and to see what happens if we play each other outside of the U.S. I said, ‘I’m excited. Bring it.’ I’ve never been the one to back down from anything like that.”

Pressed on whether Ostapenko’s comments were racially motivated, the American star replied, “I didn’t take it in that way, but also, you know, that has been a stigma in our community of being ‘not educated’ and all of the things, when it’s the furthest thing from the truth. So, whether it had racial undertones or not, that’s something she can speak on. The only thing that I’m worried about right now is continuing to move forward through this tournament.”

Their next matchup will have folks glued to their seats. Stay tuned, this rivalry just got personal.
