A teacher in New Haven, Connecticut, was arrested after allegedly pulling a 12-year-old student by the hair.

Police charged Jennifer Wells-Jackson, 49, with risk of injury to a minor and second-degree breach of peace following the alleged incident inside a classroom at King/Robinson Interdistrict Magnet School.

“There’s certain things you say and there’s certain things you don’t say, there’s certain things you do and certain things you’re not supposed to do especially when dealing with people’s children,” the child’s mother said.

“At the end of the day, there’s no justification for putting your hands on someone’s child.”

Video allegedly showing the incident depicts a woman grabbing a student’s hair as classmates shout. The woman releases her grip, and the child backs away.

“The district takes student safety very seriously. The school and the district are cooperating fully with the investigation by the New Haven Police Department,” New Haven Public Schools said in a statement.

A school district spokesperson said that Wells-Jackson had been placed on leave pending the result of the investigation.

Wells-Jackson was released on a $20,000 bond following her arrest.

This is a poorly written and incomplete article that is meant to anger readers and enflame opinion against the teacher. The article refers to a video showing the teacher grabbing the student. If the video is known and has been watched, then the behavior of the child prior to the incident should also be known. If the teacher walked across the room and assaulted the student for no reason, then the teacher was clearly wrong. If the student was cursing the teacher or another student – and refused to stop when asked – then there is a gray area. If the student was assaulting another student, then perhaps physical action by the teacher was justified.
