  • A Virginia judge put a special counsel on Jay Jones’ reckless driving case.
  • Questions now swirl around how Jones did his court-ordered service hours.
  • Jones’ ties to a political group and past messages fuel concerns.

A judge in Kent County, Virginia has chosen a special counsel to lead the investigation into Democrat Jay Jones’ 2022 reckless driving case, after the original prosecutor stepped away due to a conflict.

Jones was clocked speeding 116 mph in a 70 mph zone. He dodged jail but got hit with a $1,500 fine and had to finish 1,000 hours of community service.

This year, Jones said he wrapped up those hours—splitting service between the NAACP and another group called Meet Our Moment.

Meet Our Moment is Jones’ own political committee. That connection never showed up in the court paperwork as proof for his service requirement.

Watchdogs are now asking if Jones really put in the hours he claimed, since he was also working full time at a law firm and campaigning in 2023.

The Republican incumbent, Jason Miyares, called on Jones to leave the race, saying, “Jay Jones had already disqualified himself with his violent text messages fantasizing about the death of his political opponent and their young children. Now we learn that he may have misled the courts to avoid jail time after recklessly driving 116 miles per hour on one of the most dangerous stretches of interstate in Virginia.”

Miyares argued Jones can’t do the job during an open investigation and claimed staying in the race would show “a contempt for voters never seen in modern Virginia political history.”

Jones continues to lag in polls, struggling after old texts revealed he wished harm on a top Republican and his family. As Miyares stays on offense, this story isn’t fading soon.
