January 1, Sore Loser: College Basketball Player Punches Opponent After Loss [Video]

An unsportsmanlike incident occurred in the handshake line after Bowling Green defeated the University of Memphis in the Women’s National Invitational Tournament on Thursday night, and now a member of the Memphis team has been charged with assault.

As the teams lined up to shake hands after Bowling Green’s 73-60 win, Memphis player Jamirah Shutes stopped to talk to Bowling Green’s Elissa Brett. At one point during the brief exchange, Shutes appeared to throw a punch at Brett’s face, causing Brett to fall on the floor by the scorer’s table.

While there wasn’t immediate information available about what caused the confrontation, Brett reportedly took a “hard elbow” to her face from Shutes during the opening quarter.

The University of Memphis’s athletics department said that the incident was “extremely unfortunate and certainly not consistent with, or representative of, our expectations for our programs and student-athletes.”

The department noted that the incident occurred after the game was over, and as such, the jurisdiction falls to the local authorities.

Bowling Green is also reviewing the incident.

“Violence is never acceptable and our priority remains the health, safety and support of our student-athlete, who is recovering and doing well” Bowling Green Athletics said Friday in a statement. “This is an active investigation in conjunction with the City of Bowling Green Prosecutor, and no further comment is available at this time.”

It’s just women’s college basketball. Not like it’s a real sport

Prosecute it as a hate crime. Oh that’s right, black people hitting white people is justice right? They can’t discriminate or do hate crimes, I forgot!

The ruling is incorrect the players are covered by the NCAA college basketball rules of conduct ALL the time. There will be penalties to come for this Memphis Thug. Interesting that a player can reach this level without having learned sportsmanship.
