Wyatt’s Take

  • Americans are seeing how SNAP funds have supported noncitizens.
  • The new law now blocks most noncitizens from SNAP benefits.
  • Democrats’ shutdown highlights waste in welfare spending.

As SNAP benefits run dry during the Democrats’ shutdown, Americans are talking about who really gets help from these programs. Outrage is rising, especially as news spreads that around 90,000 noncitizens will lose SNAP access not because of the shutdown, but due to a new law passed by Republicans.

Groups who support handouts for noncitizens are using the timing to protest, but many Americans are learning for the first time how much taxpayer money has been used to buy groceries for noncitizens.

Democrats refused to vote for a clean continuing resolution, which led to the current government shutdown and stopped SNAP funding. At the same time, the One Big Beautiful Bill, signed by President Trump, tightens up who can get SNAP. Now, most refugees, asylum seekers, and other legal immigrants can no longer receive these benefits.

KFF Health News spoke with a noncitizen from Africa who admitted through a translator, “I would not have the means to buy food…How am I going to manage?”

The report showed federal, state, and local governments have spent $457.2 billion on refugees and asylum seekers between 2005 and 2019. Over one-fifth of these people received SNAP help, compared to 15% of all U.S. residents.

Americans are starting to understand just how much the system has been abused. Politicians from both parties let it happen, but now change is here. The media wants to paint the new rules as harsh, but they’ve just exposed the truth about who’s really been benefiting.

Wyatt Matters

When hard-working folks find out their tax dollars are used to feed noncitizens instead of helping our own, it’s no wonder they’re upset. These cuts strike a blow for fairness and make sure welfare serves the American people first.

No other country would subsidize non-citizens and especially illegal aliens and leave their own citizens out to dry. We have our own homeless, destitute citizens that have been ignored, especially veterans. Many homeless who are on welfare are physically capable of going to work but have been enabled. Drug paraphernalia has been supplied to keep them dependent. Some have mental issues and need help. Asylums and rehabs will be reopened so many have a chance at a real life. Unlike many other countries, we treat our veterans like crap, like second-class citizens. That’s tragic. Now there will be hope for the future for so many that just needed a helping hand up, not hand out from enablers.
