  • Even the top spy agencies aren’t safe from betrayal when personal profit comes before national loyalty.
  • Germany just learned the hard way that handing over 2,000 secret documents to the highest bidder has consequences.
  • Every Western country needs to wake up before our own secrets end up on the open market.

A former head of Germany’s foreign intelligence service now sits behind bars after federal prosecutors say he sold classified documents and helped a foreign intelligence service.

August Hanning, 80, ran the BND from 1998 to 2005 and now faces charges of treasonous espionage and attempted treason.

“Strongly suspected of treasonous espionage, spying out state secrets, attempted treason, and espionage,” prosecutors stated.

His former chief of staff, Manfred D., was also arrested for allegedly feeding Hanning the documents in exchange for cash.

The two men reportedly struck a deal back in 2010 that lasted until 2022, with Manfred D. handing over roughly 2,000 classified files.

Hanning then used that stolen material to prepare paid analysis for a foreign intelligence service, according to investigators.

“Investigators believe Hanning used classified information to prepare an analysis for an employee of a foreign intelligence service,” a federal prosecutor’s spokesperson told German broadcaster RTL.

The case came to light during an unrelated child abduction probe in Hamburg, showing how one investigation can expose far bigger national security threats.

Hanning’s arrest marks the first time a former BND chief has been detained for espionage.

Both men are expected to face a judge at Germany’s Federal Court of Justice.
