January 1, Report Reveals Millions Spent on Illegal Immigrant Care
Wyatt’s Take
- Democrats claim illegal immigrants aren’t getting taxpayer benefits, but new data says otherwise.
- Open The Books found nearly $200 million in federal health grants went to illegal immigrants since 2021.
- Billions more are funneled in through Medicaid and education spending.
For years, politicians said your tax money doesn’t support illegal immigrants.
New findings from Open The Books show this simply isn’t true.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries denied that Democrat spending plans would fund healthcare for illegal immigrants, insisting it would require a law change.
Corporate media echoed this, but the facts don’t add up.
Open The Books reports nearly $200 million in federal health grants have already been spent on illegal immigrants since 2021.
That doesn’t even count the roughly $27 billion sent through Medicaid between 2017 and 2023, according to the Congressional Budget Office.
Another $70 billion every year goes toward education for undocumented migrants and their children.
“When elected officials argue that taxpayer dollars aren’t going to illegal immigrants that just isn’t true,”
said John Hart, Open The Books CEO.
“Taxpayers have a right to know that billions of their dollars are flowing to illegal immigrants in direct and indirect benefits for health care, education and more.”
The watchdog points to big spending on studies and services targeted at undocumented immigrants.
These include $2.4 million to UCLA to research reproductive health for undocumented Asian women, $424,752 to UC Irvine for healthcare access among low-income immigrants, and $18,678 to USC for studying end-of-life care disparities in undocumented Hispanic immigrants.
The NIH awarded $1 million to a project on “culturally relevant” drunk driving interventions for immigrants, finding undocumented individuals are less likely to be involved in DWI events in part because they avoid law enforcement.
But this is little comfort to people like Joe Abraham, whose 20-year-old daughter Katie was killed in a drunk driving crash by a previously deported illegal alien in Chicago.
The driver was going 78 miles an hour in a residential area and is now serving 30 years in prison.
Another $2.6 million was provided to Via Care MAT and Recovery for opioid treatment programs, aimed at “low-income, primarily Latinx adults,” including the undocumented, in East Los Angeles.
California takes the lead in using federal dollars for illegal immigrant healthcare, with $65.5 million received, far outpacing Florida at $26 million and D.C. at $22 million.
Health care policy expert Elle Minarik described how Democrat proposals let states launder Medicaid money to cover these costs, inflating federal expenses.
“It uses the Medicaid money-laundering apparatus to inflate federal costs through increased in-state Medicaid spending, and then invoice the federal government to be reimbursed,”
Minarik said.
With spending like this, the debate over where your tax money goes is more relevant than ever.
Get the facts—citizens deserve to know how Washington spends their hard-earned dollars.
