In the height of the summer season, your much-anticipated party plans might be facing a few tweaks due to an extensive, ongoing recall of food items caused by Listeria, a bacteria that can lead to serious illness, or even death in severe cases. Initiated with cucumbers and bagged salad items, the recall has now started to affect a range of pre-packaged produce, including hot party favorites like guacamole and salsa sold in Kroger grocery stores.

The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) issued a new recall notice on July 25, originating from JFE Franchising, a company based in Houston, Texas. The company has chosen to recall a limited amount of their Snowfruit products due to potential health risks.

The profile of affected items includes Snowfruit’s Guacamole Chunky Medium, Guacamole Chunky Mild, Guacamole Blender Mild, Salsa Medium, Salsa Mild, Pico de Gallo Classic Hot, Pico de Gallo Classic Medium, Pico de Gallo Classic Mild, and the Guacamole & Pico de Gallo Combo, among other packaged vegetables and herbs. These items were sold in plastic containers and were distributed to select Kroger stores across Kentucky, Michigan, Ohio, and West Virginia, as well as to Jay C Food retail outlets in Indiana.

The company urges consumers who have purchased affected Snowfruit products to refrain from consuming the items and instead bring them back to the point of purchase where they can receive a full refund, or simply to dispose of the products. Ensuring consumer safety is a top priority for the company, and it is fully dedicated to resolving the issue completely.

Additional Listeria-related recalls are ongoing, such as the one led by Wiers Farm, Inc which has seen the company recalling vegetable and produce products from major retailers like Kroger, Walmart, Aldi, Save-a-Lot, and Shop N Save. These recalls were prompted after routine checks by Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) discovered potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination.

While no illnesses or complaints have been reported in connection to this latest recall, the bacteria can cause a severe illness known as listeriosis. A separate Listeria outbreak has already resulted in 34 cases of sickness, along with two reported deaths, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Roughly 1,600 Americans contract listeriosis each year, with about 260 fatalities annually, the CDC reports. Particularly vulnerable groups include pregnant women, newborns, adults over the age of 65, and people with compromised immune systems.

Listeriosis symptoms can range in severity and duration. Anyone who consumed the contaminated products and is now experiencing symptoms like fever, muscle aches, and gastrointestinal issues is urged to seek immediate medical attention.
