At the break of dawn, our men and women in uniform unfurled a massive American flag down the side of the Pentagon. The 20-by-40-foot Old Glory marked a solemn day of remembrance for the victims of the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks.

The display honored the nearly 3,000 innocent Americans who were murdered when radical Islamic terrorists hijacked four commercial airliners and turned them into weapons. Two planes struck the World Trade Center towers in New York City, one hit the Pentagon, and brave passengers on United Flight 93 fought back over Pennsylvania, sacrificing themselves to save countless others.

184 people lost their lives at the Pentagon that day when American Airlines Flight 77 slammed into the building’s western side. The military has never forgotten.

This annual tradition serves as a powerful reminder that freedom isn’t free. While the political class in Washington plays games and makes excuses, our military stands ready to defend this nation against all enemies, foreign and domestic.

The flag ceremony comes as many Americans feel their country is being attacked from within by forces that want to erase our history, dismantle our borders, and apologize for American strength. The contrast couldn’t be starker between those who honor our fallen heroes and those who kneel during the national anthem or call patriotism toxic.

Twenty-three years after that terrible day, the threats haven’t disappeared. They’ve just changed form. But the resolve of the American people, embodied by that massive flag flying over the Pentagon, remains unshaken.
