January 1, Pelosi To Run Again Despite Pledge To Step Down
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) will seek reelection again in next year’s midterm elections despite her previous pledge to step down after 2022.
The news comes amid speculation over who would replace Pelosi as the leader of the House Democratic Caucus if she retires after the 2022 elections, which are widely expected to result in Republicans winning back the majority.
Pelosi has held her party’s top spot in the House for nearly two decades. In 2018, Pelosi agreed to a term limit plan that would mean she wouldn’t seek reelection after 2022. Last November, she reaffirmed her plan.
But a new report, citing “sources familiar with Pelosi’s thinking,” said that the House Speaker isn’t ruling out breaking that pledge and remaining leader of the House Democrats for yet another term.
If Pelosi does seek reelection, she would be 82 at the start of her next term.
