“Ever since sports betting started, I get people telling me to kill myself every week,” he told reporters. “Because I’ll hit a kick that loses them money, or I’ll miss a kick and it loses them money. The other day, somebody told me to get cancer and die.”

It isn’t just old-fashioned disappointment in your home team. The sports world is now filled with bettors risking rent money—fueled by easy mobile apps invading every living room, podcast, and TV broadcast. Monthly online sports gambling in New Jersey alone now tops $1 billion.

That easy money is addicting normal folks—dads, teachers, store clerks—never built to handle it. Meanwhile, reports swirl about game-fixing in leagues like the NBA, MLB, and UFC. Online gambling dwarfs league profits, raking in $150 billion this year compared to the NFL’s $24 billion.

The real losers are working Americans, with studies showing young men most at risk for financial ruin and suicide. Rutgers found a clear link between online gambling and increased suicidality in this group.

Sports integrity doesn’t stand a chance when cash outweighs fair play and the temptation grows with every tap of the phone. Even federal warnings and investigations may not be enough as the problem spirals.

Apps pulling billions are hollowing out families and the very nature of American sports. The choice is clear: either stand up for ourselves, or let the apps win. Middle America knows which side we’re on.
