Police in Arizona have released a report on the final weeks of 10-year-old Rebekah Baptiste, shining a grim light on a case of severe abuse and neglect. The report summarizes interviews after Rebekah was found unresponsive at a rural campsite where she lived with her father and his girlfriend, both now charged with first-degree murder.

The family had been living off-grid in a yurt without basic utilities, hauling water and sleeping on bare floors. Rebekah had tried several times to escape her situation, including on the day she was finally hospitalized.

Woods, the father’s girlfriend, initially told investigators that a neighbor found the girl after she ran away. Records reveal this wasn’t her first attempt to flee an unsafe environment.

Despite Rebekah’s failing health, Woods, who claimed to be a nurse, said the child “would be fine” and didn’t call for help right away. Both adults at first denied knowing the cause of Rebekah’s condition, but medical professionals documented grave injuries: brain bleeding, burns, missing toenails and hair, and many bruises and cuts.

When officers showed the father “horrendous photos” of the injuries, he “lacked in expressing any emotion.”

“After seeing these photos, I knew there would be no way a father would not notice the extensive injuries on his daughter, it would be impossible in my mind, for a father not to see these huge marks and bruises on his child,” a detective wrote.

Baptiste admitted to hitting his daughter with a belt for running away but denied responsibility for her head injuries. Bloody clothes were found in the tent, changed before calling for help.

Three emergency calls from Woods that day revealed little urgency. She told dispatch that she provided rescue breaths but delayed other life-saving efforts, unsure about moving the child onto rocks as instructed.

Paramedics arrived soon after, but Rebekah did not recover from her injuries. Both adults now face not only murder, but also child abuse charges involving Rebekah’s younger siblings.

Investigators learned of repeated reports from school staff warning child protection agencies about the children’s wellbeing. Thirteen calls had been made in two years, but the system did not intervene in time.

The Department of Child Safety admitted the tragedy has shaken the community, saying, “Anytime a child in our community is harmed, it deeply affects us all, especially when we know the family.” Officials promised transparency in reviewing the agency’s role in protecting Rebekah.

Arizona’s governor has vowed a full investigation as outrage grows and folks demand accountability for a life lost and a family overlooked for too long.
