Wyatt’s Take

  • Newsom jokes about different California roots from Harris, saying there’s distance between them.
  • He claims he’s never challenged Harris’s ambitions and doesn’t plan to in the future.
  • Polls show several Democrats are top choices for 2028, with no one officially running yet.

California Gov. Gavin Newsom was pressed on the chance he might face Kamala Harris in the 2028 Democratic race. He stayed vague and left his future up to fate.

Both Newsom and Harris are rumored to be considering presidential bids, but neither has confirmed plans. When asked on TV if their parallel paths could collide, Newsom quipped about their different home cities, then stressed he won’t get in her way.

“That’s… fate will determine that. And I’ve never gotten in the way of her ambition ever.”

“I haven’t. And I don’t imagine I would in the future.”

Newsom emphasized only controlling what you can control, repeating that this is what his new book tries to teach. The latest poll puts Pete Buttigieg in front as a 2028 Democratic contender, with Newsom and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez tied for second.

Harris and others trail behind, but the field is still wide open.

Whoever ends up running, the stage looks set for a fight among Democrats who may not see eye to eye, even if they come from the same state.
