Big media outlets rushed to report that federal agents took a five-year-old from a Minnesota school district, stirring anger and fear. The stories made it sound like ICE agents were targeting kids, showing photos of a small boy in a Spider-Man backpack.

But DHS says the real story is different. Agents were trying to arrest Adrian Alexander Conejo Arias, who is suspected of living here illegally, when his young son happened to be with him.

When faced with law enforcement, the father ran, leaving his son behind. The agents kept the child safe while tracking down the dad and offered to place the boy with his mother, but she refused.

Both the father and son ended up together in detention. Still, media coverage focused more on sad details—like the boy’s backpack and hat—than on the facts that agents acted to protect the child.

The press often bends stories to make American enforcement look cruel, hoping to sway opinion against any real immigration action. Folks should look past the headlines and demand the truth.
