Wyatt’s Take

  • The lawsuit says Michigan’s top election official is breaking the law.
  • New rules could allow people who’ve never lived in Michigan to vote.
  • Democrats may benefit at the expense of election integrity.

Michigan conservatives are fighting back against a state directive that lets people with no connection to Michigan cast votes in its elections. The lawsuit points out that the state constitution and election laws clearly say only residents should vote in Michigan.

Republicans argue that letting non-residents vote is illegal and gives Democrats an unfair advantage.

“A United States citizen who has never resided in the United States but who has a parent, legal guardian, or spouse who was last domiciled in Michigan is eligible to vote in Michigan as long as the citizen has not registered or voted in another state,” says Benson’s official guidance.

The complaint highlights that real clerks, like Cindy Berry from Chesterfield, are stuck trying to follow two sets of rules that don’t match up. The lawsuit warns that without court action, honest election workers will be forced to choose which law to follow.

One Democrat insider admitted, “something like 80 percent of Americans abroad vote Democrat.” With Michigan elections sometimes coming down to a handful of votes, that’s no small thing.

If this change goes through, it could let people who’ve never set foot in Michigan help pick its leaders and decide close races.

If you care about fair, local control of our elections, now’s the time to pay attention, folks. Stay tuned—it’s your voice, your vote, and your state.
