January 1, Kathie Lee Gifford’s Shocking Voicemail Reveals Forgiveness, Ends Decades-Long Feud

Kathie Lee Gifford, former “Today” co-anchor, was stunned when she received an apology from Howard Stern. In her new book, “I Want to Matter: Your Life Is Too Short and Too Precious to Waste,” Gifford discusses the power of forgiveness and how it ended a decades-long feud with the notorious shock jock.

“It was a surprise to get a voicemail from Howard Stern,” the 70-year-old recalled. “Once I listened to it, I said to my kids at the table, ‘Well, pigs have now officially flown… [But] I just always believe God can touch anybody’s heart… I’m not allowed to hate anybody that hates me. Once you start praying for people, you can’t hate them. Love cannot live where hate does, and it’s a very simple thing.”

Gifford’s feud with Stern began in 1995 when he asked his fans to boo her during her performance of the national anthem at Super Bowl XXIX. The two never met or spoke until years later, when Stern appeared on “Today” to announce his role as a judge on “America’s Got Talent.”

“The Lord… said, ‘Kathie, go down and say hello to him, and wish him well with the show,’” Gifford shared. “And I said, ‘OK Lord.’”

The encounter led to Stern leaving Gifford a voicemail filled with profanities, apologizing for his past behavior. In a private conversation, he asked for her forgiveness.

Gifford told him, “I forgave you 30 years ago, and I’ve been praying for you every day since.”

Today, Gifford insists there are no hard feelings and she continues to pray for Stern daily.

“I can find something good in anybody,” Gifford said. “That’s what my faith teaches me.”
