The Supreme Court is weighing whether New Jersey had any reason to investigate First Choice Women’s Resource Centers. Justice Clarence Thomas called out the state’s attorney for probing the pro-life group without any actual complaints from the public.

During the hearing, Thomas pointed out the lack of real allegations against this specific pregnancy center. New Jersey’s top lawyer, Sundeep Iyer, admitted, “We had no complaints, but … state governments, [the] federal government initiate investigations all the time in the absence of complaints where they have a reason to suspect that there could be potential issues of legal compliance.”

Thomas pressed again, asking, “But you had no complaints?” Iyer’s answer didn’t change. Instead, he talked about broad suspicions and reviewing the group’s website. Thomas wondered out loud why the state was pursuing such a deep investigation without any real proof or public complaints.

The justices seemed skeptical of why New Jersey wanted so much information from First Choice. The pro-life group says the state is trying to chill free speech and harass supporters.

Keep an eye out as the Supreme Court decides if states can go after groups like this without solid cause. When government power goes unchecked, regular folks who step up for their beliefs could pay the price.
