Wyatt’s Take

  • A federal judge blocked a new policy restricting how reporters communicate with military officials.
  • The court ruled labeling journalists as security risks for asking questions violates the First Amendment.
  • The judge found the rules too vague and gave the government excessive power to exclude outlets.

The judge stated that the public needs access to information about what its government is doing, especially during military conflicts.

Officials at the Pentagon expressed disagreement with the ruling and plan to file an immediate appeal.

The policy allowed the Pentagon to revoke press badges if reporters sought information not authorized for public release.

Most news organizations refused to sign the new rules, leading to a massive shuffle in the Pentagon press corps.

Government lawyers argued the restrictions were necessary for national security and to prevent illegal disclosure of secrets.

“Americans deserve visibility into how their government is being run, and the actions the military is taking in their name and with their tax dollars,” a media spokesman said.

“It was more important than ever that the public have access to information from a variety of perspectives about what its government is doing,” the judge wrote.

The policy stated that while publishing sensitive information is protected, asking for it could make a reporter a safety risk.

With so many leaks and miss information from the. Media, I understand why they limited reporters.

Americas want the truth, not opinions, and we want to be safe in our own country.

Mdedia access is a privilege, NOT a right. Long ago the media understood that some information was sensitive/secret and would treat it as such. Now, it’s all about a scoop and a “gotcha”. I say, cancel ALL the briefings. If there are no briefings, then there’s nothing for them to bitch about access.
