Levi Aron, known for the horrific murder of young Leiby Kletzky in 2011, died Wednesday morning at a hospital near the Wende Correctional Facility. Aron was serving a 40 years to life sentence for kidnapping and killing the Brooklyn boy, an act that shook the city to its core.

The killer admitted to snatching Leiby just blocks from his family’s home and later panicked after seeing news of the search. He confessed to drugging and smothering the boy, then hiding the remains in a suitcase and a dumpster.

“I went for a towel to smother him in the side room,” Aron confessed. “He fought back a little bit but eventually he stopped breathing. I was still in panic from the fliers and afraid to bring him home.”

The tragedy rattled Brooklyn’s Orthodox Jewish community and brought heartbreak far beyond New York. Leiby’s father chose not to comment, but he had once sued Aron and his family for damages, calling the crime “utterly reckless, malicious and wanton.”

Correction officials shared Aron was taken to a hospital for a medical condition before his death, and the family has requested an autopsy.
