January 1, ICE Targets Illegal Immigrant in Deadly Maryland Wrong-Way Crash

An illegal immigrant from El Salvador is facing serious charges after a wrong-way drunk driving crash on Interstate 270 that killed a mother and daughter.

U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement has filed a detainer to stop Montgomery County from releasing the man back onto American streets.

Officials say Jose Antonio Caballero-Nolasco was drunk when he drove the wrong direction on the Maryland freeway on August 29.

His car slammed head-on into another vehicle carrying four people.

Musammat Shamima Begum, 46, and her 23-year-old daughter Areebah Jahin both died in the crash.

The family was heading home to Northern Virginia when the collision happened.

“This tragedy was completely avoidable. Musammat Shamima Begum and Areebah Jahin should still be alive. ICE has lodged a detainer asking officials in Maryland to commit to not releasing this killer back onto our streets,” said DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin.

Responding officers said Caballero-Nolasco smelled of alcohol, had bloodshot eyes, and slurred speech after the crash.

Investigators found beer bottles in his vehicle and believe he made no attempt to brake before impact.

“There were some beer bottles that he admitted that he had been drinking,” said Montgomery County State’s Attorney John McCarthy.

Two other people in the second car, a 62-year-old man and an 8-year-old girl, survived the crash and were hospitalized.

Caballero-Nolasco now sits in the Montgomery County Detention Center facing multiple homicide charges.
